The 3-D engineering class at Community School West in the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU) is a place where students to learn new skills and give back to the community. The class was started at the alternative school in fall 2015 by teachers John Rieg and Greg Marshall. As part of the class, former student Justin Sullivan obtained instructions for using a 3-D printer to create a prosthetic hand. The design came from a North Carolina company that matches recipients with the prosthetic hands. Sullivan mastered complex software necessary to create two prototypes and finally, a finished product.
