Sunrise School students with competitive and supportive employment goals participated in Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) on Wednesday, October 19, 2016. This national event celebrates National Disability Employment Awareness Month – an opportunity for students with special needs to be mentored for the day by the area’s best and brightest business women and men and to be exposed to the world of work and the workplace.

To promote career awareness and development, students participated in DMD at the Monroeville Giant Eagle. Students learned about the importance of food safety, rotating stock, and greeting customers appropriately. They viewed the massive ovens in the bakery and enjoyed touching a live lobster in the seafood department. However, the preferred activity appeared to be working as a cashier. Each student had the opportunity to “check-out” a customer, while learning the best scanning techniques which yielded an authentic receipt.

Students were not served lunch – they made lunch! They rolled their own pizza dough, designed their own pies, and loaded them in the pizza oven. Next, they created their own hoagies and learned how to use a convection oven. Finally, students decorated their own cupcakes for a perfectly sweet ending to the lunch menu.
