Bellefonte Area elementary students proved their literary talents when 12 students were recognized for their writing during the 2018 Centre County Library Young Author and Illustrator Contest.

Winners
-Bellefonte Elementary School students Timothy Osman and Noah Tomlinson placed first in the first-grade category for their book, “The Cranky Robot Finds a Home.”
-Benner Elementary School student Bella Lowry placed second in the first-grade category for her book, “Lemon’s Story.”
-Benner student Madeline Rasmussen placed third in the first-grade category for her book, “The Tale of Lucinda.”
-Benner student Grayson Zinobile received an honorable mention for the original story, “The Two Twin Superheroes.”
-Five Marion-Walker Elementary School students swept the second-grade category. They are: Nate Winfield, who placed first for his book, “All About Aliens;” Riley Hoy, who placed second for her book, “Maisy Saved the Day!”; Samuel and David Witmer placed third for their book, “Grumpy the Extra-Ordinary Cat;” and two honorable mention recognitions went to Deirbhile Maloy for, “A Book of Poems,” and Julia Sharpe for her book, “Who Turned on the Light?”
-Benner third-grade students Ava and Lilly Howard placed first in their category for their book, “The Hidden Treasure.”

Children’s Librarian Laura Sarge said the contest, in its 33rd year, encourages students in first through sixth grade to enter an original story. Entries are then judged by a panel of community members.

The student with the first-place winning story gets a hardbound copy of his or her book with copies that can be found at the library. Families of placing authors and illustrators have the opportunity to purchase copies of their children’s stories at the award and participation ceremony, which usually includes a visit from a local author and an excerpt-reading session from each story that placed in the contest. Winning students also receive a metal.
