Camp Hill Students Grow & Harvest Plants from Mobile Aquaponics Carts

At the start of the 2017-18 school year, each school building in the Camp Hill School District purchased stations that house complete aquaponics systems. The mobile stations feature a fish tank on the bottom of a cart which provides fertilizer and water to grow plants on the table above. Fourth grade students were able to harvest and replant a new crop as part of their Ecology unit. They harvested, cleaned and tasted the first crop of lettuce. This leaves room for the next crop which will be part of a Pizza Garden. The new seeds students will plant include chives, basil, oregano, vine and roma tomatoes. Seventh-grade science classes have also been busy planting and harvesting this year. The first round of plants included strawberries, bok choi, lettuce and kale that students used to prepare salads. They started planting new seeds and are excited for the next harvest. This is a fantastic learning opportunity for students and provides a practical foundation in the areas of agriculture, aquaculture, and hydroponics.
