CCCTC students attend SMART Camp through Penn College

Penn College developed Science and Math Applications in Real-World Technologies (SMART) Girls to counter an alarming academic and social trend: Girls tend to shy away from math and sciences as they enter adolescence and their important high school years. SMART Girls provides young females the opportunity to experience math and science as a foundation for careers in technology.

CCCTC took several students to the summer overnight camp. Campers will get to work in the Carnegie Science Center Mobile Fab Lab, a laboratory for innovation and invention equipped with 3D printers; laser and vinyl cutters; a Shop Bot; and more. Teams will design a business plan and replicate a product that they believe can be successful in today’s economy. Along with the Mobile Fab Lab, campers will have the opportunity to visit Penn College program labs that provide students with the training to enter careers associated with digital fabrication. Teams will present their plans and products at the end of the week to a panel of judges to see which team created the most innovative ideas. Campers need no prior knowledge of 3D printing or design – just a willingness to work together, learn new technology, and have a great time!
