For the two weeks after school was officially out for the summer, more than 100 Plymouth Whitemarsh High School (PWHS) student athletes were still on campus — making a difference for upcoming athletes through summer camps. The camps serve as fundraisers for the teams, but more importantly, they give the young students coming up through the system a chance to bond with the older kids, build their skills and get a taste of the opportunities they’ll have as they get older. “We’re showing them how much fun it is to play volleyball,” said Lily Acquaviva, a senior at PWHS. “It’s been such a big part of all of our lives, so being able to share that with the kids, teach them the basic fundamentals and get them comfortable with the sport is really cool.” For the younger children interested in sports, PWHS teams offered clinics in baseball, basketball, soccer and volleyball. “I like seeing them grow during the camp,” said Megan Peuser, a PWHS senior who was also helping with the volleyball camp. “Even in that time, they get the fundamentals and key skills down. It’s amazing how into it they get.” In addition to helping the younger students learn specific sports skills, the camps also help the older students develop skills related to teaching and coaching, time management and responsibility.
