Elk Lake students visit the PA Farm Bureau’s Mobile Ag Lab

Elk Lake Elementary students were treated to hands-on science experiences via a visit from the PA Farm Bureau’s Mobile Ag Lab. The lab, a 40-foot trailer equipped with work stations, features all the equipment necessary for about 36 children at a time to complete agricultural science experiments. The supplies and equipment used in the mobile facility are not readily available to elementary classroom teachers, so the experience was unique. However, the curriculum used is in line with state requirements and endorsed by the PA Department of Agriculture. According to an article in the school district’s newsletter, each lab activity focused on a different aspect of agriculture such as PA’s primary commodities, the environment, biotechnology and more. The students were required to act collaboratively as they moved through the scientific process – forming hypotheses, collecting data and drawing conclusions.
