Erie SD students learn financial literacy

Financial literacy is an important skill, but one that many students don’t have the opportunity to learn until later in life. Erie SD is working to change that with a community partnership and a financial focus in their afterschool program – Gears Afterschool Edventure.

Gears is primarily focused on helping students develop skills in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), so education on financial matters fit well with the program’s goals. Representatives from Marquette Savings Bank visited 11 schools in the district in conjunction with “Teach Children to Save Day,” a nationwide initiative. They talked to the students about needs and wants, and setting priorities. Then the students completed math worksheets that applied the principles of spending and saving.
