Fly-Tying/Fly-Fishing at PVIS

At Pequea Valley Intermediate School one sure sign of Spring is the start of the annual after school Fly-tying club. This year marked the 15th anniversary for the Fly-tying Club. Intermediate school teacher Todd Andrews has enjoyed fly-tying and fly-fishing since he was young. A few years after he started teaching at PVIS he went to the school’s PTO and put together a proposal to buy enough equipment for him to be able to instruct five students in the art of tying flies for fishing. The PTO was very supportive and acted quickly to approve the funding. Mr. Andrews was also able to get donations of fur, feathers and other consumable materials from fly-fishing friends and others who were supportive of helping students learn the fun of fly-fishing. Typically, the club runs for 8 weeks and occurs after school. Students can either take the late bus home at 5:00 pm or have their parents pick them up. The culminating activity occurs the last evening of the club when the group makes a trip to the local Pequea Creek to try out some of the flies they made. It is always a fun experience for all those involved.
