Student win medals in national art competition

Four Fox Chapel Area High School students were recently named national winners in The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2019.  The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards continues to be the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious educational initiative supporting student achievement in the visual and literary arts.

Senior Michela Nicholas received a Gold Medal for her digital art and junior Anzu Sekikawa won a Gold Medal for her drawing and illustration and a Silver Medal for her digital art.  Additionally, senior Seo Yeon “Christina” Wang won three Silver Medals – one for her art portfolio, and individual medals for her mixed media and sculpture.  Junior Amelia Bothe won a Silver Medal for her digital art. The award-winning students are under the instruction of the district’s art teachers Joan Marangoni and Amy Wickman.

This year, nearly than 340,000 works of art and writing were submitted by students in grades 7-12 through regional contests and only the top 1% were recognized at the national level. Prior to being named national winners, all four Fox Chapel Area students were named Gold Key winners in the Pittsburgh Arts Region of The Scholastic Art Awards of 2019.

All of the national medalists will have their work published on The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards online galleries in June at artandwriting.org. Michela and Anzu and their Fox Chapel Area High School teachers have been invited to attend a national ceremony at the world-famous Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 6.
