Celebrating the Peach Fest at James Gettys ES

Gettysburg Area SD’s James Gettys Elementary School has been selected as a Blue Ribbon school for significantly closing the achievement gap among its K-5 students. Through an innovative initiative called hybrid learning and significant parent/community involvement, Principal Donna Harrison has led her team of dedicated teachers and staff to this prestigious honor. James Gettys is one among 279 public schools and 50 private schools receiving this award.

“It really takes a village,” Harrison says, smiling widely when speaking of this success.

Recently the school has launched a schoolwide reading event designed to bring excitement about reading both at school and at home. Parents are encouraged to participate by helping the children read James and the Giant Peach. Guest teachers and community members have created podcasts showcasing certain chapters, which are read aloud. An old-fashioned Peach Fest was one of the culminating activities.
