East Side Elementary dedicated an evening to stressing the importance of reading every day. The staff and community volunteers created a carnival-like atmosphere for students and their parents to enjoy at Trojan Stadium. There were clowns, a magician, musicians, a dunking booth, numerous obstacle courses, face painting and various carnival games. Families in attendance were also able to enjoy free carnival food that was bought with donations from East Side’s faculty and staff. Before the evening began, Johnstown Mayor Frank Janakovic proclaimed the day “Read Like a Trojan Day.” During the carnival, games and concessions were paused every half hour so that those in attendance could enjoy hearing a famous Dr. Seuss story read aloud by Greater Johnstown SD staff or community members, while the district’s students performed the stories for the audience. At the conclusion of the event, every child in attendance received a free book to encourage reading at home.
