Hempfield German language students give gnomes homes

In mid-September, 54 Hempfield High School German III and IV students adopted gnomes through the “Give A Gnome A Home” program, a nationally recognized project created by Hempfield German teacher Frau Lauren Jannotta. The project consists of students adopting gnome refugees from Germany. Each gnome comes with its own unique personality.
Through raising their gnomes, students learn a wide variety of German grammar and vocabulary and use it in context while participating in many projects such as iMovies, building miniature houses and costumes, and creating digital portfolios of their work. Dr. Jennifer Redmann of Franklin & Marshall College and Dr. Susanne Nimmrichter of Millersville University officiated the adoption ceremonies and spoke with Hempfield High School students about continuing with German at the university level and study-abroad options.
