For the first time this school year, Howard Elementary School held a Veterans Day event to help educate kindergarten through fifth-grade students about the purpose of why veterans and those serving in the military are honored. Activities the afternoon of Nov. 8 allowed students to rotate to different stations, which included a lesson on helmets from two Navy veterans who work at the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg; a presentation by two Penn State police K-9 officers and their dog; a flag-folding demonstration; kid-friendly military drills; and more. Principal Skip Pighetti said the event was spearheaded by fifth-grade teacher Amber Buchanan to help educate students about Veterans Day and prepare them for the districtwide Veterans Day event that was held later in the week.
