Swim team cheers for opposing swimmer with special needs

“Success” can be defined in many ways. For many athlete programs, it can be about winning, however, in the Lewisburg Area SD it is also about sportsmanship and the life lessons sports teaches. This email, recently received by Lewisburg Area High School about the conduct of several members of the swim team, illustrates the point: “On Friday night your swim team came to our school. I want to applaud your students for being wonderful athletes with terrific sportsmanship. My daughter swims. She is special needs and is always the last swimmer in any event in which she participates. On her last event, the 100 breast stroke, she was at least one pool length behind everyone. Three young men on your team crouched down by her lane and cheered her on. She talked about that all last night and all day today. It really was a wonderful thing to see, and it brought tears to my eyes. I really wanted to acknowledge the boys and thank them. If I could have spoken to them, I would have. This is what we need to see more of in this world. Please share this email with your swim coach so these boys are told how much my family appreciates their kindness. I don’t know their names, but they should certainly remember doing this for her. Thank you, boys, and thank you Lewisburg School District and parents for doing such a wonderful job raising these kids.” For more on this story see the article and video on WNEP.com.
