Reading Team holds Socktober Drive
Members of the Meyersdale Middle School Reading Team will once again be collecting socks as part of the “Kid President Socktober Drive.” The sock drive will be held through October 31.
According to Reading Team advisor, Mrs. Megan Edwards, this is the third year students have committed to this initiative.
Socktober was launched by Kid President creator Brad Montague four years ago. It’s a movement to get kids and grown-ups to help the homeless in an easy, fun way. Every night in the United States an estimated 600,000 people live on the streets.
“I came across the idea in one of Kid President’s YouTube videos. I like to show his clips in class now and then because he’s very enthusiastic about education, and my kiddos adore him,” explained Edwards. “When I first saw this particular video, I thought, ‘what a wonderful, yet simple way to contribute!’ I feel like we all take little things, like socks, for granted when we don’t have to experience life without them, and this time of year especially, with colder weather and snow on the way, socks are just as important as hats and gloves when it comes to keeping us warm and healthy!”
The Meyersdale Middle School Reading Team has chosen to donate the collected socks to The Children’s Aid Home and Society of Somerset County. This organization has been serving the needs of Somerset County children in need since 1889. The Children’s Aid Home Programs include Residential Care, Foster Family, Partial Hospitalization, an Adoption program and an Alternative Education and Sear and Reunion. The mission of The Children’s Aid Home and Society is to provide a continuum of quality services, which promote the emotional, behavioral, educational and physical development of children, adolescents, and their families.
“Each year I run Socktober, I try to pick a new place in which to donate so we can share the wealth. We have donated to a homeless shelter and a women’s home in the past, but what better way to encourage our kids to participate in this great sock drive than by telling them that they’re helping kids just like them,” explained Edwards.
Last year, more than 10,000 schools, families, businesses, and churches rallied together to bring Socktober to life. People from every state and continent have taken part in Socktober!
