On Thursday, February 1, fifth and sixth grade students representing each elementary school in Hempfield School District traveled to Hempfield High School for a Model UN Day. This is the culminating activity for the students’ first semester unit of study. The students arrived around 8:15 a.m. and were welcomed by HHS Principal, Jim Dague. The students spent much of the morning working with students from the high school Model UN Club before hearing a keynote speech delivered by Mrs. Laura Dresher from the EPA in Washington, DC. Her speech, titled The Power of Partnerships, focused on water issues. After lunch, the students reconvened their group work with the high school students, culminating with the groups presenting and voting on resolutions developed during their group work. The high school students then presented recognition awards to the outstanding elementary student-delegates.
