Buddy Program builds friendships, social skills

A new program at Northeastern Middle School is building friendships and helping students practice social skills. The school partnered with a local organization called Autism York to create the Buddy Program, which matches students on the autism spectrum with “buddies” – other students at the school. According to a York Dispatch article, the group engages in several gatherings throughout the year, giving the students a chance to get to know each other and work on communication skills. This year’s activities included a swim at school’s natatorium, laser tag, snow tubing, bowling, eating ice cream at a local shop and playing games with senior citizens.
