Pequea Valley agriculture program extends classroom out in the field

Pequea Valley agriculture students are able to develop their own personalized Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) project to use the information that they gain inside the classroom and apply it to their own experiences outside of the classroom. Two students, Evan Landis and Jordan Melson, both sophomores and active FFA members recently shared their project updates. Evan is working on a swine production farm where he is learning to be a successful swine producer. A few of the major learning experiences that he has had through his SAE project include practical skills such as clipping teeth and giving injections, as well as evaluating a vaccination program and understanding pig nutrition needs. In addition, Evan helps with the cutting and bailing hay on the farm, gaining a real understanding of the hard work and dedication it takes to be a successful farmer. Jordan’s SAE project took shape as he developed a strong interest in plant science during his introduction to agriculture class. Jordan’s SAE project at Ken’s Gardens has taught her many skills in working with plants through all stages of plant production — from planting the seed to seeing that plant being sold to a happy customer. Jordan learned different methods of plant propagation and a also learned how to care for and manage different types of plants. Jordan also has learned customer relations skills and shares her knowledge and love of plants.
