Read Under the Lights

On Tuesday, Sept. 18, more than 120 learners and their families attended the Second Annual Read Under the Lights Event at Pequea Valley HS stadium. The goal behind the event is to provide a fun, positive family experience for elementary learners and families as they interact with high school athletes who read children’s stories. Learners were able to rotate between sports stations where athletes read children’s books and got to know the families. During intermission, athletes were encouraged to demonstrate their sport to the learners and have them participate as well – a field hockey net was brought out to practice taking shots on the net; cheerleaders put on stunts and cheers; the basketball team demonstrated how to pass a ball and learners practiced along with them. One of the highlights of the event was that every child was able to go home with one free book. The positive relationships that were fostered between parent and child, and learner and athlete were a hallmark this event.
