At Plymouth Elementary School (PE), first grade students read stories and created thought bubble projects based on “I have a dream” in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

“Mine says, ‘I have a dream that everyone has a place to live,'” said first grader Elizabeth Forgione.

“My picture is of people thinking about love. I have a dream that everyone feels loved,” said classmate Iris Fricke.

The students completed the project during English Language Arts. The “I have a dream” prompt is similar to many of the other sentence starters the students use in their writing.

“We write about ‘I like to,’ ‘I can,’ ‘I help when,’ ‘I want to be’ and a lot of other stories,” said Elizabeth. “Right now, we’re also working on a funny story about an animal.”

Leading up to the “I have a dream” project, the first grade teachers reviewed how to be a good citizen from their social studies unit in the fall, as well as some of the school climate themes that they cover during Morning Meetings as part of the Responsive Classroom.
