Seneca Valley Aviation Program takes flight

Sixteen students at Seneca Valley have the opportunity to take their learning to new heights – literally. Students enrolled in Christopher Brown’s aviation course learn how they can obtain their pilot’s license. “It is something that could potentially provide a lucrative career at a very young age,” said Brown, the health/physical education and aviation teacher. “The idea of aviation is exciting and provides students with the knowledge to think critically, problem-solve and utilize science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills in a realistic application.” Seneca Valley students were fortunate to spend time earlier this month at High Flight Academy where they were able to review and learn more about the various parts of an airplane, including the instruments, engine, flight principles and aerodynamics. In addition to a luxury jet tour, students also were able to take part in a full-motion simulator, all at no cost to the students or district thanks to High Flight Academy. According to Brown, the program will be expanding in the future with help from Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and their free curriculum for schools. The course covers specific information about aviation and the economic and social impact of aviation in modern society. Each student is given time to evaluate and practice simulated flight through the use of their two-in-one devices which was part of the one-to-one computing initiative that began this school year.
