Students pull out all the stops for veterans

In November, a group of local veterans enjoyed a delicious breakfast and entertainment, courtesy of Wyoming Valley West Middle School students. According to an article in the Times-Leader, the event was part of the school’s Veteran’s Day celebration, which included performances by the brass band and string ensemble and the reading of an award-winning essay by eighth-grader Baraa Kamal. A group of about a dozen students volunteered their time to prepare and serve attendees a meal of quiche, sausages and fresh fruit in the family and consumer sciences classroom, which had been decorated with stars, stripes and handmade cards thanking veterans for their service. The students also organized a fundraiser that garnered about $3,000 for the Sneaker for Soldiers campaign, which provides athletic shoes to deployed combat troops.
