Susquehannock Ass’t Principal Education/Workforce Development Advocate of Year

At Susquehannock High School (SHS) the focus has been on redefining the image of success in education. As one of the biggest champions for student success beyond graduation, SHS Assistant Principal James Sterner was named by the York County Economic Alliance (YCEA) “Education/Workforce Development Advocate of the Year”.

Sterner recently received YCEA’s Spirit of York County Award for 2018 for his work at SHS advocating for authentic learning opportunities to better prepare Susquehannock graduates for the workforce, post-secondary education, and the global economy.

Through partnerships with dozens of York County businesses, Sterner provided professional development for Susquehannock’s staff to visit local organizations and communicate directly with business leaders.

“From this experience, our outstanding staff organized internships, provided career exploration trips, sought out opportunities for professional credentialing, set up community service opportunities, and retooled their classes to support the career preparation of our students,” explained Sterner, who was humbled by the recognition and hopeful it spotlights Susquehannock to even more connections and opportunities.

Sterner, who began teaching at Susquehannock in 2012, became the high school’s assistant principal in 2016.

Fulfilling Southern York County School District’s mission of “changing the lives of our students, one Warrior at a time”, Sterner is passionate about ensuring SHS students are provided personalized learning opportunities as they work to transition from Susquehannock to post-secondary learning and employment, described SHS Principal Kevin Molin, who notes that SHS is reaching out to work collaboratively with the greater York County community.
