Students at Northwestern Elementary are excited to get a free book from the book vending machine in The Tiger’s Reading Den.

Mrs. Susan Hanlon, librarian at Northwestern Lehigh Elementary School, received a grant from the Northwestern Lehigh Education Foundation to create The Tiger’s Reading Den in the lobby of their school.

She also gained the community support of Dominic Cino at Ambition Gym to add a book vending machine to the reading area opened to all classes at the school. This special area is also decked out with a cozy rug, a couch and comfortable flexible seating. Students will receive free books throughout the year under the guidance of the librarian. Students may also “buy” a token with tiger paws they earn through the school wide positive behavior program.

The Grand Opening, held on October 11th, hosted students, administrators, local stakeholders and the community group, Lehigh Valley Reads. So far, this new addition has been a big hit as students anxiously await their turn to get a free book! It has contributed to the school’s positive culture of reading, as it encourages reading as something fun and exciting.
