Trinity Area High School urban farm partnership impacts community

Over the past two years, Trinity Area High School has been committed to developing community partnerships that enhance the skills students acquire in the classroom. A recent partnership with the Washington Co. Food Bank enables the school to provide locally sourced, fresh vegetables to individuals served by the food bank, as well as to assist the food bank with their fundraising efforts. The partnership has enabled Trinity students to produce and harvest more than 6,000 pounds of potatoes and other vegetables this year alone. Additionally, students from business classes created fundraising campaigns to support and promote the food bank’s “Taste of Washington” event. The success of the district joint venture is motivating them to pursue grant funding for a Freight Farm, which is a vertical hydroponic farming system built inside a 40-foot shipping container that is capable of growing vegetables year round. This development in our Vocational Agricultural Program has had a significant impact on our students. Students are excited to be a part of this endeavor that enables them to be on the forefront of the “urban farming” initiative, as well as participate first-hand in the farm-to-table movement that is so critical to the community’s most vulnerable residents.
