Something ‘fishy’ is going on at West Greene SD

[photo from district website]West Greene SD Envirothon students brought some unusual learning materials into the classroom this semester – trout. The effort is part of the Trout in the Classroom program, made possible by a partnership between PA Fish and Boat Commission and PA Council of Trout Unlimited. Accompanying curriculum, fish food and other materials are provided to the students through this partnership. The purpose of the initiative is to introduce students to coldwater resources and their importance to all communities. Students unpacked and sorted brook trout eggs in almost total darkness, since light can damage the eggs. After about two weeks, they were able to see the fish and expose them to direct light. They raised the fish to fingerlings in a classroom aquarium and then released them into a state-approved waterway.  To learn more about the program, visit http://www.patroutintheclassroom.org/.
