Whitemarsh Elementary kindergartners earn Martin Luther King Peace Awards

At Whitemarsh Elementary School, Susan Hope’s and Rachel Bell’s classes will be working over the next few weeks to earn “Peace Awards” in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The awards will recognize students who do nice things for others.

“I can share my toys or help other people up if they fall,” said Lorelei Baker, a kindergartner in Mrs. Hope’s class.

Leading up to the announcement of the award program, Mrs. Hope invited Mrs. Bell’s class to her room, and she read the two teams A Picture Book of Martin Luther King, Jr. by David A. Adler and illustrated by Robert Casilla. After Mrs. Hope read about the events leading up to the Montgomery Bus Boycott where the African American people were forced to sit in the back of the bus, she asked the students if that was fair or unfair. “Unfair!” was the resounding reply.

As they were leaving, Seamus Baker, one of the students in Mrs. Bell’s class, turned and thanked Mrs. Hope for letting his class visit, earning the first Peace Award for the yellow team.
