‘Hour of Code’ celebrated at Blue Ridge SD

In December 2016, Blue Ridge SD students participated in their first “Hour of Code” – an international initiative to introduce students to the basics of computer coding. High school students focused on coding during their fourth period, while kindergarten students spent the hour engaged in Kodable – a game and programming curriculum designed to teach coding to younger students. Other students participated in programming activities related to Star Wars and Minecraft. In a Dec. 7 article in the district’s student newspaper, Raider Reader, STEM Coordinator Joseph Page said that one benefit of learning coding is that the skill can help students succeed in whatever career they pursue: “The benefits of learning programming at a young age helps kids to gain advantages in thinking, processing, and communicating. These skills will later help kids to be innovative, which will translate into nearly any profession.”
