Deer Lakes Hockey “Pinks the Rink” for Hair Peace

After several years of wanting to host a “Pink the Rink” event, Deer Lakes Hockey Club held its inaugural event on Friday, October 18th at Frozen Pond Arena. “It worked out that we had both Middle School and Junior Varsity home games back-to-back on the same evening in October” stated JV Head Coach and VP, Hockey Operations, Blaise Steadman. Coach Steadman continued “This is a great opportunity to introduce new fans to our hockey teams while raising awareness and funds for a worthy cause.”

Pietro Porco, President went on to add “It is the policy of Deer Lakes Hockey to not charge admission to any of our home games. Instead, each month we select a charity that is meaningful to our families or the local hockey community. 100% of the proceeds are passed on to the charity. We feel that it is important to instill a philanthropic attitude with our student athletes by setting this example.”

For this event, Deer Lakes Hockey partnered with local organization Hair Peace. Hair Peace Charities was the recommendation of Team Manager, Patty Niederst, who had a family member with a personal connection. Hair Peace Charities was started by Bonny Diver, a local radio personality, after finding a lump in her breast after a horseback riding accident.

“You don’t realize the impact you make by helping women battling cancer. In a very dark time, they see your light shining still and it gives them hope to know our community cares” said Ms. Diver.

Hair Peace Charities helps women and girls, who live in western Pennsylvania, with financial assistance to purchase a wig needed due to cancer. Hair Peace also offers cancer fighting information, encouragement and faith with support groups. Hair Peace Charities will provide up to $200 towards a purchase of a wig.

The visiting teams were also invited to join the effort. The neighboring ice hockey team from Hampton Township School District also donated their admissions to the cause. All admissions and proceeds from the games, commemorative t-shirt sale, and other activities were donated to Hair Peace. Frozen Pond Arena, the home ice rink of Deer Lakes Hockey, also pledged $100 for the event.
