Freeport Area School District’s Buffalo and South Buffalo elementary schools have been selected to participate in the Making Spaces Initiative – a partnership between Maker Education Initiative and Google that aims to integrate maker education into curricula nationwide. This type of education helps students to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, according to an article on the district’s website. For the 10 districts chosen to participate in the Pittsburgh region, The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh will serve as a “hub” for the elementary schools, providing professional development to teachers, consultation for the design of the maker space and community-building activities. The museum will also help to launch a crowdfunding campaign to benefit the schools.
