Collaboration leads to cool chemistry in the biology lab

Governor Mifflin High School students welcomed second-grade students from Cumru Elementary school for a collaborative learning opportunity in science. High school students from Mr. Chris Killinger’s AP Biology classes led lessons for their “biology buddies” from Mrs. McKay’s second-grade class. The older students had the opportunity to use their communications and presentation skills while sharing information about several scientific topics. Younger students rotated through the learning stations, which included lessons on laboratory tools, life cycles of living things, biotic and abiotic factors, producers and consumers, environmental issues and careers in biology. Hands-on experiments and activities included the clean up of a mini oil spill, lima bean and owl pellet dissection, a fossil dig and virtual reality exploration with Google Goggles.
