Traditional school environments require students to sit still in the classroom, while Conneaut Valley Elementary School’s Movement Makers program instead encourages movement. Employees and parents installed “busy bars” on desks that let students move as they work. The school purchased bouncy balls and standing desks for students who prefer to stand while they work. Elementary school guidance counselor Daniel Varner noted that by simply adding movement to the classroom, students with attention issues are able to focus on their work instead of acting out. Parents have noted the positive impact the program has had for their children, and how helpful it is for their kids to remain seated while still moving and releasing the “wiggles.”
