Flexible seating enhances student-centered learning

Classrooms at two Hampton Township SD elementary schools have invested in flexible seating to enhance student-centered learning. The furniture allows the students to move naturally, which improves focus and performance in the classroom. Lisa Milsom, first grade teacher at Poff Elementary, incorporated six scoop rocker chairs and “standing” desks for students. The furniture was funded through a combination of grant money from the Donors Choose website and the Hampton Alliance for Educational Excellence (HAEE). At Wyland Elementary, flexible furniture and enhanced lighting are being used by second grade teacher Susan Rothmeyer and first grade teacher Lisa Burns. The furniture and lighting were purchased with an $8,000 grant from the HAEE. Burns noted that since the furniture and diffused lighting were installed, her students appear to be happier and more engaged in their work, require less redirection to stay on task, and she hears fewer complaints from students about other students fidgeting and causing distractions to others. Burns said “the students are participating more and are having more invigorating conversations.”
