STEM learning activity brought to life through community partnership

The video below highlights a Screw Machines Pen Design project, part of Mr. Bill Johnson’s third-level Manufacturing Technology (Fab Tech) course at Hempfield High School. The project represents a STEM learning activity involving a community partnership. Students were challenged to design a product that could be produced on a screw machine. The company provided a field trip to learn about what a screw machine can do and how the company uses it in manufacturing connector products, then helped students with product design criteria. Students created 3D models of prototypes. A final design was chosen, and then TE mass produced the product. The student who designed the final pen is senior Jason Hopper. The pens are manufactured from brass, plated with nickel, and engraved with Hempfield Knights. Three employees from TE Connectivity in Landisville visited the classroom to present the final products to students.
