As a little girl, Lauren Miller would watch her cosmetologist mother at work. Lauren knew at a very young age that she wanted to follow her mother’s example and pursue a Cosmetology career. Two years ago, she began her journey in the field by enrolling in the cosmetology program at the Indiana County Technology Center. In that time, her journey has been filled with accomplishments and awards, including her most recent honor as SkillsUSA Pennsylvania Nail Care Champion. A SkillsUSA member, Lauren was eligible to compete in district competition, which concentrates on pedicures, manicures, gel nails, sculpture and required the student to demonstrate creativity through nail art design. Lauren took home first place in district competition and third place at the state competition. According to Lauren, the competition was not without its challenges, “Competing against older girls who had more experience was difficult. Not knowing what to expect or how the process worked was a challenge.” Lauren credits much of her success not only to her training in and out of the classroom, but also her drive to succeed that led her to continue to perfect her skills throughout her junior year. As Pennsylvania’s champion, Lauren competed in the national competition, earning fifth place in nail care. Now a senior at United High School and the ICTC, Lauren plans to continue her reign as state champ and continues to proactively pursue her training both in and out of the classroom environment.
