Bancroft Elementary School students are eating their food and growing it too. According to an article on the school’s website, second-graders in the school’s Green Thumb Club planted the first crop of spinach and lettuce this spring, and the first-graders harvested it. The students learned how to prepare the beds for planting, how deep to plant the seeds, and ultimately how to harvest vegetables properly. Cafeteria staff prepared the greens so the students could enjoy the fruits of their labor. As soon as the early crops were picked, the members of the Green Thumb Club planted the summer crops of tomatoes, peppers, squash and cucumbers. Bancroft Elementary School families took care of the garden during the summer months, and food was taken home and eaten or donated to the Kennett Food Cupboard.
