Seniors impact community through service-learning projects

Phoenixville Area School District  |  Posted on

Seniors at Phoenixville Area High School have an extra graduation requirement:  a locally based, service-learning project. Although 15 hours of service is required, many students do much more. The teachers and administrators guide the students in their endeavors, but each student is responsible for their project’s successful creation, implementation and completion. Each student is encouraged to select a topic that is an area of personal interest. Upon completion, the seniors must submit a written evaluation focusing on the value and importance of the project and how it impacted their life. They must also orally present the project to a panel of administrators, teachers and peers. This gives the students the opportunity to reflect not only on the logistics of the project, but how their volunteering positively impacted their community.
