Tiny house project give students real-world experience

Lancaster County CTC is taking advantage of the popularity of “tiny houses” to give students some real-world construction experience and raise funds for more educational experiences. At the school’s Brownstown location, more than 200 juniors and seniors worked on constructing at 308-square-foot tiny home over the course of a year. Although it is small, the house features many of the amenities as a larger home with custom-made cabinetry, two bedrooms, full-size bathroom, washer and dryer, and a full kitchen. The home will be sold and proceeds used for the construction of another tiny home by students at the school. According to an article on LancasterOnline.com, this year’s project involved students from seven programs at the CTC — HVAC, cabinetmaking, painting, electrical, architectural computer aided design and plumbing. Juniors enrolled in the construction courses also assisted, and senior students mentored the less-experienced students on the job site.
