North Penn SD hosts 13th annual Reading Super Bowl event

More than 70 North Penn High School (NPHS) football players participated in the 13th Annual North Penn Reading Super Bowl Event held districtwide on Feb. 1. This event is held in conjunction with the date of the NFL Super Bowl LI 2017. These readers visited all 13 North Penn School District (NPSD) elementary schools and read to more than 5,900 children in 247 classrooms across the district as part of the reading incentive program. Reading specialists at the elementary schools chose age-appropriate books for the football players to read to the students. This program fosters an interest in reading in the elementary students and allows the high school students to act as role models for literacy. In 2005, this event began with 30 football players visiting eight elementary schools. Thirteen years later, it is exciting to see how this activity has flourished into every elementary school and that the students who were among the first group to be read to are now the readers! For the 13th consecutive year, the NPHS football players had real trading cards highlighting statistics, including their favorite book, to hand out to the students. These cards are generously supported by the NPSD Educational Foundation, Printworks & Company Inc. and QNB Bank.
