A hand-thrown pottery bowl by Oley Valley junior Zach Good took first-place awards at the Souper Bowl event held on Jan. 30, 2017, at Crowne Plaza in Reading. The annual event is the major fundraiser for Opportunity House, a multi-service organization improving the quality of life for children, families and adults who face various obstacles to independent living. The Souper Bowl raises upwards of $50,000 each year for the organization. Attendees pay $30 to sample soup prepared by local restaurants and get to select a bowl to take home from works submitted by students and professional artists alike. Good’s work was selected from donations of hundreds of handmade bowls. In addition, senior Sean Knarr also donated bowls for the event. The students’ submissions were an assignment for their Advanced Pottery II class at Oley Valley High School.
