Spanish Club members help elementary students welcome new classmate

In an Oley Valley fifth-grade class, students wanted to talk to and welcome a new student who initially spoke no English and whose first language was Spanish. The students’ interest lead to a six-week voluntary foreign language mini-course taught by high school students in fourth-year Spanish. Twelve seniors volunteered their time after school, once a week for six weeks, and provided 60 elementary school children basic instruction in Spanish. The program was met with a positive and enthusiastic response from all involved.
