Pennbrook students read to meet their hero

Thirty lucky students from Pennbrook Middle School traveled to the Philadelphia Flyers’ practice in February as part of Pennbrook’s sixth annual “What Should Matt Read?” competition. In an age when many students choose gaming and social media over reading, this innovative program pairs students’ love of sports with a love of books. Now in its sixth season, the “What Should Matt Read?” initiative challenges students to read as many books as possible and write reports on those they believe Matt Read might enjoy. Students take a break from their school day to watch the Flyers practice at their facility in Voorhees, NJ. When practice is over, Matt Read spends time with the students signing autographs, answering questions and posing for pictures. This program entices students to unplug with a promise, “Keep reading and you might meet your hero!” The program owes its success to Philadelphia Flyer Matt Read and is supported by the Philadelphia Flyers organization.
