Every year the Pequea Valley Future Farmers of America travels to the PA FFA State Convention at Penn State to test learner’s knowledge and skills in a variety of different Career Development Events and competitions. This past summer, four PV learners — Serena Small, Sara Lichty, Marlena Ferry and Dalton Lapp — competed in the Food Science CDE competition, placing second in the state. Individual honors included Serena Small (a 2017 graduate) who earned first place and Dalton Lapp (senior) who earned second place at the state level. The team advances to the BigE, representing Pennsylvania at the regional level in West Springfield, Massachusetts. In September, the team placed fifth for the region.

County fair success
Fair season for PV FFA was a success! This year the PV FFA chapter had three learners demonstrating and proving their skills in animal handling, management and showmanship at local county fairs. Eden Groff, FFA vice president, showed both her lambs and dairy beef at the West Lampeter Fair in September, earning Reserved Grand Champion Market Lamb and Supreme Champion Dairy Cow, as well as first place in the Dairy Beef class. In his first year of showing, Trevor Huber showed market goats at the New Holland Fair in October, where he earned himself Reserved Grand Champion as well as taking home first place in showmanship. Adrianna Reiter, FFA treasurer, also showed at the Solanco Fair with her Dairy Beef cows, earning fifth place.

Team earns first place in county trapshoot competition
Every year Lancaster County FFA members have the chance to compete in the annual Hunter Safety Trapshoot Competition. There are two component to this contest. First, students take a hunter safety exam consisting of 50 questions. The second component is the trapshoot itself. Students shoot at total of 50 rounds of clay birds. Students are scored based on how many clay birds they can shoot out of those 50. This year the PV Trapshooting team stepped up their game, placing first in Lancaster County. The contest promotes safety while hunting and is always a big hit for FFA members. This year’s trapshooting team includes Kyle Monday, Dustin Huber, Trevor Huber, Dalton Lapp, Luke Brown and Reuben Stoltzfus.
