Pittston Area SD students in grades 1-4 have another opportunity to learn outside of the usual school day. The SHINE, or School and Homes In Education, program offers students a wide-range of project-based lessons in the STEAM subjects: science, technology, engineering, arts and math. According to an article in the Times Leader, the program runs four days a week through most of the school year at the Pittston Intermediate Center. SHINE also has a home visit component for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students. SHINE has been a public-private partnership in neighboring Carbon and Schuylkill counties for several years. The expansion is possible thanks to a $2 million grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
