Elementary students explore college through fair presentations

A Millmont student shows off her “College Fair” project on Bloomsburg University.

Millmont Elementary’s “College Fair” is becoming a popular and fun tradition at the elementary school. Beginning in late winter, fifth-graders select a college to research. They must find out common topics like location, tuition costs, enrollment figures, available majors, mascots and famous alumni. In addition to computer research, many students write letters to their chosen college’s admissions department, which often respond with information and swag. The students then place their information, along with pictures, on tri-fold boards — similar to a science fair. They present their displays for parents and staff during the “College Fair” in May. Younger Millmont students also attend and complete a college checklist by visiting the displays, Additional elementary schools plan to host their own College Fairs this school year, too.
