Sixth-grade students at Sto-Rox Upper Elementary School are learning the basics of quality journalism while creating their own student newspaper. Lead by teacher Chris Scarnati, a former journalist, the students produce a monthly publication – Viking Voice — that is distributed throughout the school and send home to parents. The paper is an extracurricular activity and the students meet once a month after school for pizza and planning. According to an article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, skills in writing, grammar, interviewing and making deadlines are honed as well as critical thinking, as the students consider audience and content.
