Wyoming Area students improve recycling efforts

Recycling will now be mandatory throughout the Wyoming Area SD, thanks to senior Kim Ferrara. An environmental advocate and competitor in the annual Luzerne County Envirothon, Ferrara founded the Leaders of Environmental Awareness and Protection (LEAP) – a group that promotes recycling, conservation and other topics – last year. When she started her senior year this fall, Ferrara noticed an opportunity to take positive action in the district. Although recycling receptacles were available in schools, they were not being used consistently. She brought the mandatory recycling proposal before the school board, and it was unanimously accepted. LEAP members plan to make signs to promote recycling and increase the number of receptacles that are available in the schools. They will also dedicate time during school to ensure that the recyclable materials are handled properly.
