‘Amazing Kids’ program teaches compassion

Sixth- and eighth-grade students at Apollo-Ridge Middle School are learning the best ways to interact with students with disabilities of all kinds. The school had a visit from the Amazing Kids Workshop, a program founded about 20 years ago through the Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh to help educate kids about disabilities and dispel common misconceptions. According to an article in Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the students watched clips from other students who have autism and other disabilities. In the clips, the students talked about how it feels to be excluded and bullied because they are different. The purpose of the experience is to guide children toward more compassionate interactions with others.
