Students in York County had the chance test their science skills in the 25th annual Physics Olympics held at Dallastown Area High School in March. Over the two day contest, students competed in groups of up to five each in a variety of events such as Mirror Madness, which requires participants to use mirrors to point a laser beam at a receiver, and an event that requires teams to build a vortex cannon to blow out candles. According to a York Dispatch article, organizers say the competition attracts students who are not enrolled in physics courses as well as those who are, and it helps students to see the real-world applications of physics. The event is sponsored by the Engineering Society of York, which provides participant T-shirts, cash prizes and covers some costs for participating schools.
